How to Have a Brilliant Career
Having a brilliant career will mean different things to different people. Asking for what you want is another way to have a brilliant career. If you simply do what you are given to do without making your wants and needs known to management, then you cannot expect any nice surprises. But if you ask, you never know what may turn up. To one it might be a career that brings fame; to another a brilliant career could bring untold wealth or power. To yet another person a brilliant career will be one that brings contentment and a sense of self worth, or knowing that they have helped many people in various ways.
Whatever your idea of a brilliant career is, it can be helped along by taking care to do certain things. One of these is to never stop learning. You don't necessarily have to learn things to do with your career, though that will come into it. Who knows but that down the track some distance what you learned for fun might come in handy? Even if it doesn't, you will have had an experience that made you grow as a person. Does that have anything to do with your career? Yes, since so much of your time is spent in the pursuit of your career that the sort of person you are is always important.
Remembering that anything such as a chance encounter or incident can become an opportunity that adds to the overall scheme of having a brilliant career. Even what seem obstacles can become steeping stones in the process, forcing you to learn new skills to cope - new skills that will advance your career towards its brilliant mark.
That brings us to learning things especially for your career. The training you got before you started your career was just the basics. You don't stop there, but must continue learning for the rest of your life. There is always something else to learn that will enhance your life and your career. If you go forward with interest in seeing just how much you can learn, then your career will always seem brilliant to you, even if not to others. So even when there is nothing specific to learn in the technical aspects of your career, you can still learn those kinds of skills that help you understand other people better. Even learning to row will teach you team skills that can be applied to your career.
Taking stock of where you are heading every once in a while is a good exercise and helps you to keep on top of things. You might forget what your ideals were when you first began; it doesn't hurt to be reminded every so often. Skills may need updating too.
Asking for what you want is another way to have a brilliant career. If you simply do what you are given to do without making your wants and needs known to management, then you cannot expect any nice surprises. But if you ask, you never know what may turn up.
